Cibolo Creek Ranch

Thirty thousand acres of West Texas silence.

Activities

Built to withstand Apache raids in 1857, Cibolo Creek Ranch has outlasted everything the Chihuahuan Desert could throw at it — and emerged as one of the most singular places to sleep in America.

Three adobe forts sit inside an ancient volcanic caldera ringed by the Chinati Mountains, a landscape so remote that the silence genuinely takes getting used to. There are no TVs. Cell service is unreliable. Bison roam the perimeter. This is not a place that performs wilderness — it is wilderness, with exceptionally good food and a pool.

Practical Information

When to go

October through April. Summers push past 100°F and the sun is relentless — beautiful in its way, but brutal for most visitors. Spring is the sweet spot: wildflowers appear in March, temperatures are perfect for riding and hiking, and the light on the Chinati Mountains in the late afternoon is unlike anything else in Texas.

Who it's for

Couples who actually want to be alone. People who have stayed everywhere and need somewhere that still surprises them. Anyone who has ever wanted to feel genuinely small — in the best possible sense — standing under a sky with no competing light for 50 miles in any direction.

The draw

The stars. The Chinati Mountains produce some of the darkest skies in the continental United States, and on a clear night the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. Bring layers — temperatures drop sharply after sunset year-round. Beyond that: horseback riding through volcanic terrain, open-air Humvee tours, clay shooting, and meals rooted in Mexican culinary tradition that are far better than they have any right to be this far from anywhere.

Getting there

Fly into Midland International (MAF) for the shortest drive — about 2.5 hours south on US-67. El Paso (ELP) is 3 hours and often has better flight options. A rental car is non-negotiable; rideshares don't operate out here. The last 8 miles are unpaved. Arrive before dark the first time.

Why choose Painted Sky? We curate for the genuinely curious traveler. When you book through Painted Sky, you get reduced rates, special perks, and exclusive access.
